  2. Hi, Will:

My name is Elizabeth McCollum and I'm a volunteer at the Brattleboro Historical Society. I have just stumbled across an ancient Egyptian necklace of very fine carnelian beads (while doing inventory of our costume collection) that I believe MR Cabot may have given to Dora Williams in California, which ended up back with us in 1986.

I've been in contact with Jerry Carbone at the Brooks Library here in Bratt, and he told me that MRC gave a large collection of Egyptian artifacts to the Library in 1913, some of which came from the Egypt Exploration Fund. We have a letter that Grace Ware Haskell wrote to Mrs. Williams in California, about the necklace, seemingly from just after Mrs. Cabot's death (since she asks about the effects of the Depression in California!).

Anyway, I'm so glad I found your blog! You've given me the connection between Grace and Mrs. Cabot! Grace only mentions "Aunt Molly's things" and "Aunt Molly's notes" in the letter we have, but seeing your blog post about Mrs. Cabot being known as Aunt Molly gave me the clue! MR Cabot must have sent them to her the year before, as Mrs. Haskell talks about the carnelian chain that was sent to her "last year". I can transcribe the letter for you if you're interested.

We were apparently given the necklace by Rhona Williams, Dora's daughter, who was living in Palo Alto, California, where she lived following her family's move from Brattleboro. Dora was the daughter of Malcolm Moody, a treasurer for the Vermont Savings Bank here in Brattleboro, and she married Thomas Williams, who I believe also worked for the bank, though I'm not sure of that. Anyway, Malcolm Moody moved to California in the late 1800's, I think. And so did Dora, possibly with her husband.

Sorry if this is a huge info dump, but I wanted to get it all out there before I forgot the details! The necklace is beautiful and according to the note, which Grace actually quotes in her letter to Dora, it is from the 12th Dynasty, circa 2000 BC, and came from a mastaba tomb in Abydos.

By the way, the collection that MRC gave to the Brooks Library sadly seems to have mysteriously dispersed sometime before 1967, when the old library building closed and was torn down and the new one put up, according to Jerry.

I'm curious to know if you've turned up any connections with the Moody family or with the Williams on the part of MR Cabot. She does mention Malcolm and his family in a footnote of the Annals, when she's talking about the Bank.

And of course, I wanted to let you know about this connection with your family and your amazing great grand-aunt!! I am also going to be getting in touch with an English Egyptologist from a museum at the University of Oxford, who contacted Jerry about MRC's collection. I'm writing her an email tonight. I'll tell her about your blog, as well, if she hasn't already found it.

Feel free to email me if you like at sphinxvictorian at fastmail dot fm, if you have any questions or comments.

    All the best!

    Elizabeth

  3. Wow! Thanks for your comment, Elizabeth. I will take a closer look at the information I have, but I don't recall anything specific about the Moody or Williams families. I don't recall seeing anything in the records that I have about Egypt and Egyptian artifacts either. I have what appears to be some sort of a will inventory list from Mary Rogers Cabot that may provide some information. I have started transcribing it, but have not done much yet. I may try to get over to Brattleboro sometime this summer. I have always wanted to stop in at the Historical Society, but in the past it has not been open when I am in town. In the meantime I will find time to continue my transcription and posting of MRC's book of dates to see if that holds any more clues. That would be great if you could send me a transcription of my grandmother's letter that you mention.

    Thanks again for contacting me.
